Connecting YOU to the World's Best Psychics

Controlling the “self”

self controlSelf-Control. Say that to yourself a few times, what comes to mind? Where do you start and how do you even begin to gain the sense of freedom that it gives you?

I hope to be able to give you a sense of understanding here, so we can all go on and lead a much more positive lifestyle. I’m not talking about doing the best of the best, the perfect exercise plan, the perfect diet plan, I’m talking about the balance you need in your brain. Your mindset, your willpower.

Willpower is a response that comes from both the body and the brain. To be more exact, it comes from the section of the brain right behind your forehead. The one that helps us with things like decision making and balancing our behavior. This section of our brain needs constant minding. Almost like a newborn or a toddler, it needs to be fed with good quality food so it has the energy to carry on the day. Don’t get me wrong, it is hard to constantly be on top of what you are feeding your brain. Throughout the day our emotions take over or we get sidetracked and the journey to better living gets harder. The easiest way to look at willpower, is looking at it like a muscle. It will get exhausted with overuse, but there are experts who believe that we can strengthen our willpower by training our brains.

Here are a few steps that you can take to help you train your brain!

1- Stress Management– I know, you have heard it before. No use crying over spilled milk. Being under constant high level of stress means that our energy is being used in other areas like making decisions based on short term outcomes. Our brain shuts off and it often loses out in this circumstance.

2- Stick to your plan – No matter what! Start by taking control of the situation. Replace your “I can’t” and “I don’t” with “I can” and “I will”.  Every time you tell yourself that you can’t do something, you are creating a feedback loop of limitations for yourself.

3- Get the sleep you need! Sleep deprivation even in its weakest state can cause chronic stress that impairs how the body and brain use energy. People who sleep between six and a half to seven and a half hours a night live the longest and are most productive. They also live happier lives as well.

4-Exercise and Nutrition- I know, I know. I said I wasn’t going to go there. But something needs to be said. Something as simple as just eating healthier and eating less processed food can make energy more available to your brain, and can improve every aspect of willpower.

5- Break Bad Habits – Postponing something you shouldn’t have can be effective when you are trying to break a habit. People who tell themselves “not now, but later,” are generally less tempted by something they are trying to avoid. You don’t need to totally eliminate everything that is bad in your life, live in moderation.

Take little steps; don’t try to build Rome in a day. Eventually it will become second nature to you and you will be looking back on this and seeing just how far you have become!
