Samhain – Past and Present

Samhain is also known in many countries as Halloween, All Souls Day or Hallows eve. Samhain is the process of honor our dead, our ancestors. It is also a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of Astrological Samhain is when the sun reaches 15 degrees of Scorpio. It is the beginning of the Celtic new year. The Celts divide their year into two halves. If we translate Samhain, we would see the meaning of summers end.

Samhain represents the darkness time of the year, the mysteries of death and what lies beyond and the promise of rebirth and renewal (the light) as the cycle of life continues despite our worst fears. You may not be about to go back in time in this life, but for Scorpio there is no such thing as a dead end. Samhain is celebrating the mating of the Dagdha, the Irish All Father with the Morrigan. The Morrigan is best remembered as the Raven, bird of death, wisdom and goddess of the battlefield. Dagdha was the god of bounty and life. So we may see this as intercourse between the human world and the spirit would when the gates between this world and the world unseen is open.

Samhain invokes spirits of the past, out of respect for the old year. It summons visions of the New Year. Trick or Treat: Serving the Unseen World By tradition, on Samhain eve the spirts of the ancestors, friends, loved ones were free to roam, just as the children are today, dressed as faerie folk, asking for their treat. We honor our dead by setting a place at the table for them, food and drink served for them and food was distributed among the poor and the needy as a means of giving back the abundance that we had received throughout the year.

Given of food was a sacred trust and if it was not done you would incur the wrath of the faerie realm. If you did not offer a treat you would receive a trick from the faerie realm and lose in the coming year for your lack of generosity. Soooo….. remember to treat the kids and have a fun and safe holiday.
